The Tyne was the first 'fast' slipway boat, introduced in 1982. It is the main slipway lifeboat but a number also lie afloat. At nearly 18 knots, it doubled the speed of earlier slipway boats. Features include a low profile wheelhouse and seperate cabin aft of the upper steering position. Propellers are protected by substantial bilge keels. The last Tyne was built in 1990.
The North Division has Four of the Tyne class lifeboats operating in the division.
